Sandra Anderson, a 63-year-old resident from Palmetto, Georgia, and five-year breast cancer survivor, is on her way to meeting her goal of walking every day for a year.
In a recent report by FOX 5 Atlanta, Anderson said this came after moving from Columbus for a new job and feeling like she was stuck in a rut and craving the need for a physical and emotional cleansing. After realizing that she had walked every day for a month, she decided to try and do it for a full year.
"It was traumatizing, or culture-shocking, not to have a vehicle," Anderson told FOX 5 Atlanta. "So, I never thought about walking anywhere. I grew up in Gary, Indiana; it wasn't safe to walk."
As part of her commitment to walking through the rain, snow and the state's sweltering summer, Anderson has also taken steps to clean up her diet, cutting out potatoes, rice and sugar, FOX 5 reports.
For the first time in decades, Anderson told FOX 5 her BMI is in the normal range and all the feelings of depression, grief and anxiety that have weighed on her for years have dissipated to the point she now feels well rested and has more energy.
On July 23, Anderson will meet her goal at the one-year mark.
"I feel more driven, more driven than anything," Anderson told FOX 5 Atlanta. "I've got to get to the goal. I feel accomplished. I feel focused."
